Artificial nests in China aim to save Oriental white stork from extinction

In a nature reserve in the Yellow River Delta in eastern China’s Shandong province, conservationists have built 115 artificial nests for the birds. The number of baby Oriental white storks has grown from seven in 2005 to 1,954 today, according to the Shandong Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve. The migratory bird is under first-class national protection in China and listed as “endangered“ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which estimated that about 3,000 birds remained around the world as of 2019. But Chinese state media has quoted the joint crane conservation committee of the China Wildlife Conservation Association as saying there are now 9,000 left in the wild. Support us:
