Time Mapping Considerations: Most silent films were shot at slower speeds than “talkies“ (sound films). Typically 16fps to 20fps frames per second for a silent film as opposed to the standard 24fps, so that unless special techniques are used to show them at their original speeds they can appear unnaturally fast, which reinforces their “unnatural“ appearance. However, some silent films were intentionally undercranked to accelerate the action; this form of stylization was done with comedies far more often than with dramas. We have time-mapped frame by frame using the latest technologies in order to reach a 24fps “natural pace“ projection result which added 30 minutes to the 2h30 minutes 16fps original speed. NB: It might seem a little counterintuitive but the higher the frame rate, the smoother and slower the motion will appear in this specific case we slowed the motion in order to reach a full organic and natural pace. CHARLIE CHAPLIN’S STATEMENT ABOUT 16-FPS: Economics dictated shooting closer to the threshold of the illusion, and most silent films were filmed around 16-18 frames per second (fps), then projected closer to 20-24 fps. This is why motion in those old silent films is so comical, the film is sped up. Charlie Chaplin. _______________________________ Screen Adaptation - Co-Production : MISANTHROPOS – Official Website - Adapted by Maximianno Cobra, from Shakespeare’s “Timon of Athens“, the film exposes the timeless challenge of social hypocrisy, disillusion and annihilation against the poetics of friendship, love, and beauty.
