Consonants /w/ and /ʍ/

We’ve looked at a contrast that only occurs in some dialects. The consonant /w/ (witch) and /ʍ/ (which). The latter is pronounced similarly to /hw/ and is represented with a turned ’w’. For most speakers of American English, these words are pronounced identically. For others, they are as different as /p/ and /b/.
