The song was originally written as an instrumental by Charlie Chaplin in his 1936 movie Modern Times. It was inspired by Puccini’s Tosca. In 1954, two lyricists named John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics to it, giving it the sense of melancholy and optimism that infuses the track.
