Making coving. Gypsum (Plaster of Paris) molding cornice handmade.

There are three main ways to produce gypsum (plaster of Paris) covings or moldings manually. 1) Pour into silicone mold. 2) Pull the back of the cornice with a template on top the lying finished mold of the front side of cornice. 3) Pull the front side of the cornice with a template, on top of the lying finished mold of back side of cornice. The third method is common in Russia. First, a mold is made of gypsum on the table, the front side of which is the back side of the produced gypsum coving. In Russia we call this mold many names. Like “underlay thing“, “ingot (means blanc, billet)“ or “scythe peening little anvil’. Really funny. The mold is given time to dry, and then strengthened by soaking in liquid varnish. The varnish also helps to remove the finished gypsum coving smoothly, easily, without damaging the mold.
