A Checkered Past: Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara and The Chimpanzees in Need

We’re proud to present the Worldwide Premiere of the Shaun Monson short film “A Checkered Past” on July 14 – World Chimpanzee Day! This compelling film is narrated by Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, who tell the poignant story of the original 42 “Chimpanzees in Need,” who were left behind at the Wildlife Waystation. The once-thriving waystation closed unexpectedly in 2019, leaving hundreds of animals in need of new homes. All were rehomed, except for the chimpanzees, who have unique needs that only a handful of sanctuaries can accommodate. Six chimpanzees were moved to sanctuary in June, but 26 remain at the refuge, where they are in constant threat of wildfires.
