September 8th, 2001. 21 years ago, then undefeated 27 year old IBF World Cruiserweight Champion “The Tiger” Vassily Jirov makes the 5th defense of his title against the hard hitting Julian Letterlough aka “Mr. KO” who had an impressive 94% knockout ratio entering the fight.
Prefight records; Jirov 29(26)-0, Letterlough 17(16)-1-1.
In June 1999, the Balqash born Jirov lifted the IBF World Cruiserweight Title via TKO7 over Arthur Williams and proceeded to make 4 successful defenses between September 1999 and July 2001.
For his 5th defense, he was up against 30 year old Letterlough from Reading, Pennsylvania.
At this juncture, the southpaw Jirov had top wins over the likes of Adolpho Washington, Arthur Williams, Dale Brown & Saul Montana while Letterlough had yet to defeat a notable opposition.
Overall, it was an exciting bout with many explosive exchanges but Jirov’s efficient work to the body and effective combination punching eventually paid dividends as the fight went down the stretch.
In round 1, Letterlough was hurt with a left uppercut to the body followed by a barrage that backed him to the ropes but he was saved by the bell from a potentially early stoppage.
In round 3, Jirov’s legs turned rubbery from a 2 thunderous hooks after he landed 2 lefts downstairs and 1 left upstairs as he expected Letterlough to be hurt but to his surprise, the game Letterlough retaliated with a right hook-left hook combo which he accompanied with more hard shots but Jirov survived the onslaught and return fire with a number of power connects to end the round.
Between rounds 4 & 6, heavy shots were traded from both ends but Jirov had the upper hand for the most part.
In round 7, the accumulation of body punching by Jirov finally took it’s toll on Letterlough who was rocked with a pulverizing straight left hand with about 10 seconds left in round 7. Jirov went on to land a few more uppercuts and hooks upstairs but just as in round 1, Letterlough somehow made it to the bell.
However, the end was impending as the Kazakh champion continued to give the gutsy challenger a drubbing upstairs and downstairs from the opening bell of round 8 which prompted referee Jay Nady to step in as the gutsy challenger from The Pretzel City was taking merciless punishment on the ropes as he refused to go down at all course.
To his credit, Julian Letterlough showed tremendous gumption gumption and put up a great effort despite losing most if not every round en route to suffering the 1st KO loss of his career in 20 professional bouts.
By CompuBox Stats, Jirov outlanded Letterlough by 165 total punches where he connected with a little more than half the punches he threw (214 out of 425) at a % connect rate.
Enjoy this highlight of a huge win by one of the best Kazakh fighters of all time and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE!
