The best of Modest Mussorgsky. Лучшие сочинения Модеста Петровича Мусоргского (перезалив).
19th century. This is a time of mature national identity among various European nations and this is reflected in the music. After Alexei Verstovsky, Mikhail Glinka, Russian romantic nationalism in music continued to develop Mili Balakirev. A member of his musical circle, one of the members of the mighty five, was Modest Mussorgsky. He was a graduate of the military school, a deep patriot and an ideological composer who portrayed the Russian soul in music.
Mussorgsky’s impressive collection is a series of plays entitled “Pictures from the Exhibition,” written in memory and inspired by the work of his late friend Victor Hartmann (1834-1873).
Promenade is an introduction, as well as a composition that goes through the entire cycle of works. The composition reflects a walk through the exhibition and immersion in its charming atmosphere of the national spirit with the melody of Russian choral singing.
The ninth composition from the cycle of Modest Mussorgsky is The Hut on Chicken Legs (Baba Yaga). This is a clumsy, lame and fabulous composition that has the characteristic atmosphere of Russian dense forests.
The Russian majestic spirit who lived in Mussorgsky was expressed in the tenth play from the series “Pictures from the Exhibition”, in a masterpiece called “Heroic Gate”. The inspiration was a sketch of the gate in the Russian style from Victor Hartman. These gates were planned for construction in honor of the salvation of the Russian Emperor Alexander II during the failed assassination attempt on him.
Perhaps Mussorgsky’s most famous opera is called Boris Godunov, based on the eponymous tragedy of Alexander Pushkin. The opera demonstrates the suffering of the Russian people under the rule of despots.
Melody is inherent in the spirit and creativity of European man, and in essence is the opposite of the hollowing rhythms of the black continent. Mussorgsky, unlike his other works in the spirit of Russian triumph, military character and mystical nature, in the famous opera with the name Khovanshchina, managed to convey the melody of a broad Russian soul, radiating good energy.
A military officer composed in 1880 the solemn march “Capture of Kars“, dedicated to the victory of the Russians over the Turks in 1877
Modest Mussorgsky was not recognized during his lifetime, but after his death, as well as at present, his compositions are performed by eminent orchestras around the world.
His vivid mystical picture is the Night on the Bald Mountain, composed by him without drafts, and precisely at the beginning of the summer solstice. This is a cosmic event that is widely celebrated by various Indo-European peoples, including the Slavs, who celebrate Kupalo.
