Born in Armenia but now calling Los Angeles home, Ruben Karapetyan has carved out a unique place in the electronic underground. Following a ten-year hiatus, Ruben returned in 2020 to a rousing response via releases courtesy of Movement Recordings. On the strength of his first two singles for the label ’Gignesthai’ and ’Hathor’, Ruben quickly emerged as a hyped talent in the trend-driven state of progressive house. Releases via Clubsonica, Mango Alley, Univack and more would soon follow, further establishing Ruben as a top tier talent and in demand remixer. Now, following a contribution to The Soundgarden’s ’Summer Collection’, Ruben returns to his initial home of Movement Recordings with ’Live In The Moment’, alongside remixes from Michael Hooker and Dowden. Destined to be a highlight in Ruben’s discography, ’Live In The Moment’ lands in impressive fashion and once again shows his craft must be taken to heart. Perfectly sculpted grooves and billowing stabs start the journey on a darker monochrome, before hopeful vocal fragments and emerging atmospheres shift the tone into one of optimism. Ruben’s confident club energy continues to grow leading into the break, as emerging melodies reveal a glowing interlude where a dreamlike elegance takes shape. Timely vocals swell and intensify across the poignant centrepiece, elegantly peaking against a backdrop of wailing synths and clustered drums, before getting washed away as one final rush unleashes a groove-centric finale. The companion piece ’Mindful Harmony’ follows in equally impressive fashion with galloping beats and grooves setting the course for dubbed out tones and lively percussive arrangements. Orbiting effects add depth and space leading into the break, where deconstructed vocals and creamy melodies create an air of anticipation and emotion, onwards to a thumping conclusion. First up on the remixes is Michael Hooker who makes his label debut following strong releases for JEE Productions, Mango Alley and his own Re:Sound imprint. Always a creative and club-effective remixer, the Jersey resident takes ’Live In The Moment’ into his world of percussive grooves and swing heavy rhythms. Making great use of the vocal elements, along with timely synths and glowing atmospheres, Michael’s version not only brings a commanding dance floor presence, but also lands as one of his best remixes to date. The release concludes with Dowden making his label debut with the lone interpretation of ’Mindful Harmony’. Hailing from Toronto, Canada but currently calling Berlin home, Dowden has been one of his country’s premiere progressive house producers for the better part of a decade. Genre tastemakers Cid Inc, Guy J and Hernan Cattaneo have been steadfast with support, while releases on trendsetting imprints such as Clubsonica, EDGE, Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, Meanwhile and John OO Fleming’s Joof Recordings have highlighted his discography in recent years. Now, making his Movement Recordings debut in impressive fashion, Dowden delivers a dark and groovy take on ’Mindful Harmony’. While maintaining the elusive spirit of the original, the Canadian artist crafts a sweeping sonic experience all his own, a prophetic journey into a progressive hinterland, where deconstructed vocals, invigorating melodies and orbiting effects surface from their rhythmic architecture, onwards to a peak-time finale.
