Princess Cecilie (Prince Philip’s sister) was killed in a plane crash in November 15th 1937. The aircraft in which she was traveling crashed in flames after hitting a factory chimney near Ostend, Belgium, killing all on board (Georg Donatus, Cecilie, their two young sons and Georg’s mother), Cecilie was eight months pregnant. The remains of her baby were found in the wreckage, indicating that Cecilie had gone into labour or suffered sufficient bodily trauma to result in birth. The flight took off from Darmstadt Germany and was headed to London to attend her brother-in-law wedding but never made it. Not much is known about Philip’s relationship with his sister, Cecilie, before her tragic death as she lived away from her brother in Germany for quite some time. She was 10 years older than the prince and died when he was just 16.
