But this award didn’t just go to one VFX house... In fact, (in order to meet with the tremendous demand of around 3500 VFX shots per season) 10 different VFX companies worked on the show, including DNeg, Important Looking Pirates, Rise, Shade VFX, CoSA VFX, BOT VFX, Alkemy X, Technicolor VFX, Outpost VFX, and Juice. Support me by getting it on any of these sites :P Get it on iTunes: ► ◄ Listen on Spotify: ► ◄ Buy it on Amazon: ► ◄ The amazing thing about Westworld is that (even though they had to design cities. massive buildings, and do set extensions, even though they had to produce pyro effects, CG vehicles, and androids, and even though they had to create digital matte paintings, digital augmentations, and Robots, and then animate them in addition to all the compositing and color grading work) They didn’t actually don’t do very much previs work. Instead, they worked really closely with the production designer and art department in the early stages, scouting locations and developing concept artwork. By starting with actual physical locations (Like the tower that was inspired by the Montjuic communications tower in Barcelona). they always had a specific style that they could mimic with their digital work. This made the process a lot quicker than having to invent an aesthetic and go through a lengthy design process for every scene. This also facilitated the process of creating Westworld’s CG assets like machinery, robots, architecture, and technology. Westworld had a tremendous amount of VFX work, some was because they needed to show somewhere or something that didn’t exist, others were to extend or augment somewhere or something that did. But because every visual effects shot was rooted in reality, they all went by unnoticed, and this allowed the story to shine through. instead of eclipsing it.
