美 항공모함 칼빈슨 이어 핵 추진 잠수함 산타페까지 한미일 연합해상훈련 실시 협의 North Korea’s spy satellite launch at a time when a U.S. aircraft carrier is docked in Busan. And, a day after the launch, the U.S. also sent a nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea. Amid evolving threats, South Korea is reportedly discussing ways to hold combined maritime exercises with U.S. and Japan this weekend. Bae Eun-ji has more. The U.S. nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Santa Fe, docked at a port in Jeju on Wednesday, in a show of force against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. The Los Angeles-class submarine is part of the U.S. Navy’s Carrier Strike Group One, along with the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, that arrived in South Korea the day before. Seoul’s Defense Minister Shin Won-sik visited the aircraft carrier on Wednesday, and criticized North Korea’s latest satellite launch. He said, while the carrier is in South Korea, the country will lay out plans for a bilateral maritime exercise with the U.S. as well as a trilateral one with Japan, to be able to immediately respond to any type of threat from North Korea. According to government sources, South Korea is currently in talks with the U.S. and Japan to hold the joint drills involving USS Carl Vinson, this weekend. A bilateral maritime exercise with the U.S. Carrier Strike Group One will likely take place on Saturday, and then a trilateral one with Japan’s military forces on Sunday. The commander of the carrier strike group said Wednesday that the visit reflects the mutual interests between Seoul and Washington, and stressed that the U.S. Navy will continue to train and share information with its allies. “The Alliance remains at a high level of readiness to protect the Republic of Korea against any threat or adversary. This includes the full range of U.S. defense capabilities.“ The USS Carl Vinson is roughly three soccer fields long and can carry about 5-thousand crew, in addition to more than 60 aircraft including FA-18 Super Hornet fighter jets and E-2C Hawk Eye early warning aircraft. It last visited South Korea in 2017 and is the third U.S. aircraft carrier to visit the country this year --following the USS Nimitz’s arrival in March and the USS Ronald Reagan in October.
