Town Criers’ Contest (1952)

Unissued / Unused material. Town Criers’ contest in Hastings, East Sussex. Various shots of the Town Crier with his little boy also dressed as Town Crier taking his turn (natural sound). The boy looks quite bored and sits on the floor. Several more shots of Criers taking their turns, intercut with shots of audience and brass band. Among them is the eventual winner, Ben Johnson. MS judges Annette Mills (of ’Muffin the Mule’ fame), baritone Dennis Noble and RSM RW Smith of the Coldstream Guards. Compere / comedian Leslie Holmes comes to the microphone to announce the winner. Johnson comes to the stage and makes speech saying how proud he is to win for the “ancient borough of Fowey“.
