The original settlement was founded in 1174. n 1727 the province of Khlynov passed from the Siberian province to the Kazan province. On December 18, 1780 by decree of Empress Catherine II the town of Khlynov was renamed into the city of Vyatka and made it the seat of the Vyatka Governorate. The town also served as a place of exile, notably for Alexander Herzen, Alexander Vitberg, and Mikhail December 5, 1934, in memory of the Russian revolutionary, Soviet statesman and politician, Sergei M.
