Raúl Iriarte 27-02-1945 Lyrics and English translation on video notes (Show More) With thanks to Today’s Tango Is... contributor Zhanna Rabinska for unearthing this interesting story about Discépolo’s composition and writing of this tango... During a trip in 1945 to the Mallorca, Discépolo took advantage of the opportunity to visit La Cartuja de Valldemossa, the ancient palace of King Sancho, which for centuries had served as a Carthusian monastery in the mountain village of Valldemossa. It was here that the composer, Frederick Chopin, had chosen to spend the winter of 1838 to rest and convalesce during PS, the photoa respiratory illness. He was accompanied by his French lover, Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, who wrote under the pseudonymn of George Sand. The mystical spirit of Discépolo could feel how the monastic tranquility was pierced by the disturbing sound of a piano on which Chopin poured out his deepest pain. This image dictated to the poet the lyrics and music that became this tango. Music and lyrics by Enrique Santos Discépolo SONG OF DESPERATION I’m a song of desperation! I’m a leaf that’s driven crazy by the gale! Through your love, my faith disoriented, Crumbled destroying my heart. Now I’m lost inside myself Blinded by the tears of an illusion. I’m an unrelenting question That screams its pain and your betrayal! Why Was I taught to love, If my dreams are Capsized for no reason? If love Is an old enemy That leads to punishment And teaches us to weep, I ask: why? Yes! Why did they teach me to love, If by loving it was killing my love? Cruel jest, to give everything for nothing And in the end a good-bye, To wake up crying! Where was God when you left? And where was the sun, that didn’t see you go? That a woman gives her all by loving, How come a man never understands That when he gives his love, he gives everything? Who makes them believe in any other outcome? Who unravels so many dreams? I’m a song of desperation That screams its pain and your betrayal! English translation by Paul Bottomer © All Rights remain with the owners
