Isaac Hayes made his initial mark as a writer of songs for other artists, particularly Sam and Dave, for whom he penned (along with David Porter) such smashes as “Hold On, I’m Comin’“ and “Soul Man.“ As a solo artist, however, Hayes specialized in placing his personal stamp on the work of other composers.
