Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez is delivering a statement alongside members of the government on national television on Monday, July 12, following mass demonstrations held amid growing social and economic unrest. On Sunday, thousands marched across cities throughout the island, including the capital Havana, to demonstrate against food shortages and high prices, in what is considered to be one of the biggest anti-government demonstrations in decades. Protesters also demonstrated against the government’s handling of the pandemic, demanding a faster coronavirus vaccination programme, and urged the president to step down.
