Banda Bassotti - la brigata internazionale

Banda Bassotti is an Italian Ska–Punk-Oi! Band, one of the most important in the European independent scene. In thirty years it has played worldwide, from Japan to South America, selling more than records. Synopsis Sigaro, Picchio, David and Pasquale in the ’80s are workers in the building sites of Rome. The lunch break in the building site is a political debate, one day they read on Il Manifesto: “work brigades are being formed for Nicaragua”. Down there the Sandinista Front is fighting against dictatorship, there’s the war and war destroys. So the four workers leave with shovel and pick because they believe that freedom can be built. Back in Rome the workers continue being workers and during the rallies they build the stages, it’s their contribution to the cause. One day (The Clash, The Specials, ranchere e Latin rhythms on their minds) the workers decide to go on one of those stages and play. That’s how Banda Bassotti was born. In those years in England there was working class music, in Italy there was the working class making music. From the working class suburbs of Rome Banda Bassotti travels the world and supports the populations which are fighting for independence with fundraisings and the creation of humanitarian corridors, with music and elbow grease: Nicaragua 1984, El Salvador 1994, Palestine 2002 e Donbass 2014 are the most important destinations. During the years the family has grown, in Banda Bassotti there are many flags and a symbol that never misses: hammer and sickle. La Banda Bassotti è un gruppo musicale Ska–Punk-Oi! romano, uno dei più importanti sulla scena indipendente europea. In trent’anni ha suonato in tutto il mondo, dal Giappone al Sud America, e venduto più di dischi. Sigaro, Picchio, David e Pasquale negli anni ’80 fanno i manovali nei cantieri di Roma. La pausa pranzo in cantiere è una tribuna politica, un giorno leggono su Il Manifesto: “si formano brigate del lavoro per il Nicaragua”. Laggiù il Fronte Sandinista combatte contro la dittatura, c’è la guerra e la guerra distrugge. Così i quattro manovali partono con pala e piccone perché la libertà si può costruire. Di ritorno a Roma i manovali continuano a fare i manovali e nelle manifestazioni di piazza costruiscono i palchi, è il loro modo di contribuire alla causa. Un giorno (i Clash, gli Specials, ranchere e ritmi latini nel cervello) i manovali salgono sul palco e nasce così la Banda Bassotti. In quegli anni in Inghilterra c’è la musica della working class, in Italia c’è la classe operaia che fa la musica. Dalle borgate romane la Banda viaggia e fraternizza con i Compagni di tutto il mondo, sostiene le lotte di liberazione e di indipendenza. La musica e le parole diventano il mezzo di comunicazione. Negli anni la famiglia è cresciuta, nella Banda Bassotti ci sono tante bandiere e un simbolo che non manca mai: falce e martello.
