Volcano erupts near Iceland’s capital Reykjavik

A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland. Lava and smoke emanated from a fissure in the ground on the side of a mountain. It follows intense earthquake activity in the area which is around 20km from Reykjavik. Smoke from the volcano could be seen from Iceland’s capital. Experts said there was no direct imminent hazard to people living in the region. Two years ago, lava fountains erupted from the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system in the same area.
