This is one of my favorite girl group recordings. Adorable harmony! Released as one of the B-sides of “Popsicles and Icicles“ (by the Murmaids) which was a smash hit nationally. New information has come to light on “Comedy and Tragedy“, thanks to a comment on this posting from Sally Gordon-Mark, one of the original members of the Murmaids. Long thought to be recorded by the Murmaids, this turns out not to be the case. Sally writes:
“It was a group called the “Cover Girls,“ who had the same producer we did (Kim Fowley). When “Popsicles and Icicles“ suddenly became a big hit, there was nothing to put on the flip side, because we had recorded only the one song. The first B side had an instrumental, “Huntington Flats.“ Kim had the idea to use this song, which was recorded as a demo in a low-cost studio outside of Hollywood. I know this because I was one of the original Murmaids (the high voice) and have been in touch with one of the singers of the Cover Girls. That group never got credit for the song. Thanks for your interest in the songs! Sally Gordon (now Sally Gordon-Mark)“
“Comedy and Tragedy“ was quite a big hit itself in some areas, charting locally at #2 in Detroit / Dearborn, Michigan in December 1963, #5 in Tucson, Arizona, #9 in San Francisco, California and the Top 15 in Seattle, Washington.
