What some have called the “saddest Mozart piece ever“ for its wondrous portrayal of the cry of the human heart amid the depths of grief, Lacrimosa has an undertone of marching forward, the human impulse unstoppable, even in death. Out of the depths of mourning, we sense life itself--moving forward, overcoming great odds. Amid profound sadness, one can find hope in its soaring phrases. In this masterpiece, portraying the labor pains of this mortal life, we see death giving birth to life: both in generations to come and in life eternal.
