Just a year ago, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was an unknown stay-at-home mom in Belarus; now she has united a democratic movement to unseat longtime dictator, President Alexander Lukashenko. In an exclusive interview with DW, the Belarusian leader talks about courage and why she doesn’t see herself as a feminist. Almost half of the world’s population are women. But only around ten percent of countries have female heads of state or government. Germany is one of them. Chancellor Angela Merkel has been in power for nearly 16 years. She’s the first, and so far, only woman to hold this position. But she is an exception, and it is still difficult for female politicians to get to the top in a world mostly run by men.
