Performance of ’Pride & Prejudice is Published!’ at the Corsham Ball 2013
1813 “Pride and Prejudice“ Published! choreography by Liz Bartlett
Our 2013 performance pays tribute to the 200 year anniversary of the publishing of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice“ by Egerton in January 1813, for which was paid just £110.
Whilst we could have included the ’Boulangere’ (the only dance named in the book) or even a Cotillion (which Jane Austen preferred to Quadrilles), we have chosen three dances which together as a performance we feel are as “light and bright and sparkling“ as Jane Austen thought her heroine to be.
Shrewsbury Lasses (Thompson 1765)
It is not known for certain when Shrewsbury became famous for its cakes, although recipes date back to before the late 1600s when the Earl of Shrewsbury was killed in a duel by the notorious rake, the Duke of Buckingham, over the former’s wife. Shrewsbury was also home to the dancing master John Weaver (1673--1760) who “taught dance, & had an annual Ball at which his scholars, besides the Minuet & Rigadon, performed figures & pantomime...
