David Cameron ‘worried’ Israel may have breached international law in Gaza

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron voiced concern, emphasising his unease about a potential breach of international law by Israel in Gaza. During a Foreign Office committee session, he clarified that government lawyers had not explicitly provided advice on the issue, stating, “Am I concerned that Israel may have breached international law due to the bombing of a specific location? Yes, indeed, I’m concerned, and that’s why I consult the Foreign Office lawyers when offering advice on arms exports.“ The question of whether government lawyers provided guidance to Cameron on a potential Israeli breach of international law is pertinent to an ongoing High Court challenge against the UK government’s continued licensing of arms exports to Israel. The legal and human rights organisations initiating the challenge argue that mounting evidence of Israeli violations in Gaza necessitates the suspension of UK arms exports. According to the government’s arms exporting criteria, such licenses must be suspended if there is a clear risk that British weapons might be used in violation of international law.
