Aqyila - Bloom (Live) | Vevo DSCVR

Aqyila - Bloom (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. “I’m in the mood to love every part of me,” Aqyila says halfway through “Hello.” It’s an inflection point in the gauzy R&B song, which ultimately becomes a meditation on forgiveness - both the inward and outward kind. In a way similar to many songwriters, the Toronto native’s discography is a series of journal entries; she tells us that singing is like sharing an “open diary.” In other ways, the self-described introvert and Sims fanatic is putting together a sonic self-help book. So far the best chapter is last year’s ‘For the Better’ EP. “Doing the same thing / It happens everyday / I hate feeling this way,” she laments at the onset over the ’Channel Orange’-coded loop of “We Keep On.” The electro-dub “OH!“ then finds her rushing to 7/11 to grab Excedrin to treat an infidelity-induced headache. “I heard that hurt people hurt people they love the most,” she muses. Absent from ‘For the Better’ is “Bloom,” her unofficial 2024 submission for viral R&B track. The TikTok gospel scene - a very real thing - has adopted it as a reflection of spiritual love. Is relogiosity the song’s original intention? No. But this Brandy and Jazmine Sullivan acolyte knows art is always up for interpretation. Plus: Nearly 20 million Spotify streams and 450k TikTok video creations will make anything sweet. No surprise she was feeling herself when she rolled up to the DSCVR stage. “Especially when I got a live band with me,” she bragged, before backing it all up with a fantastic live version of her new hit. That positive talk will take you a long way.
