McConnell to resign as Senate Republican leader

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate’s longest-serving party leader, Mitch McConnell, announced his decision to leave his position as the Republicans’ Senate leader in November. The 82-year-old Kentucky senator has held a seat in the Senate since 1985 and has served as the leader of the Senate Republican Conference since 2007. Recently, several members of his conference have demanded he step down and make way for a younger, more Trump-aligned leader. Though he will no longer be in Senate leadership, he plans to remain in Congress through the remainder of his term, which expires in 2027.
