During this final conversation, she tries to win him back, moving from tenderness to passion, from the threat of suicide attempt to calm, from regret to outbursts of violence. A singular work subtitled “lyrical tragedy”, La Voix humaine was created two years after the Dialogues des Carmelites. Francis Poulenc composed this lyrical monologue for Denise Duval, his favorite performer, who created the role under the direction of Georges Prêtre, in a production and decor by Jean Cocteau, author of the libretto.
