The performance of the Tre Fontane ensemble draws heavily on popular music and improvisation: from the ancestral throat sing of the Sardinian shepherds on a composition by Marcabru (min. 50:06), to the Middle Eastern rhythms that arrived in Europe with the Crusades, offering a new interpretation of medieval music, far from academic schemes and canons and maybe finally closer to the spirit of the Middle Ages.
