Space Culinary Lab: Food for the Next Frontier

In October 2021, NASA announced that Astra Gastronomy (a team at Nonfiction) won the Deep Space Food Challenge for our entry - a Space Culinary Lab. Learn more by watching our entry video above! About the competition: The Deep Space Food Challenge is an international competition organized by NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Teams were invited to create novel and game-changing food technologies or systems that require minimal inputs and maximize safe, nutritious, and palatable food outputs for long-duration space missions, and which have potential to benefit people on Earth. About the project: The Space Culinary Lab is a kitchen-like system integrating algae cultures, a BBQ grill, an emulsifier, and hydroponic garden. Going beyond functionality, the Lab is a human-centered approach focused on creating positive flavor journeys for astronauts, ultimately making them happier as well as healthier. With the Space Culinary Lab, we’re taking astronauts from surviving to thriving. About the team: This project was developed by a team of volunteers at Nonfiction: Mark Alexander, Mardis Bagley, Phnam Bagley, Nadia Kutyreva, and Fifile Nguyen.
