[Eng Sub] ’Daegeum’ | Sounds of Korea Ep.2 | Korean Traditional Music 101

‘Daegeum’ Daegeum is a wind instrument made of bamboo that is played horizontally. According to the folklore of the Kingdom of Shilla, Daegeum was considered a sacred instrument that brought peace to the kingdom and kept their people safe. There is a mouthpiece for blowing in the air and six finger holes. In between, there is a special part called ‘cheonggong’; an aperture covered with a reed membrane. When this thin layer of the reed is vibrated by breath, it creates a clear yet crispy, chilled sound which gives the instrument its characteristic sound. - ‘Sounds of Korea’ is a new series made by KTM101 to introduce Korean traditional instruments.
