A Day in Israeli-Occupied Gaza (1994)

Footage of daily life in Israeli-occupied Gaza, filmed on 4 January 1994, just months after Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) signed the Oslo Accord on 13 September 1993. A landmark achievement in the search for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, the agreement saw the PLO recognise the State of Israel, while Israel recognised the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. Among the terms of the deal was a provision for limited Palestinian self-governance of the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank, territories that had been under Israeli military occupation since the Six Day War of 1967. This part of the Oslo Accord would be affirmed soon after the filming of this footage, with the signing of the Gaza-Jericho Agreement – also known as the Cairo Agreement – in May 1994. The footage filmed by ITN’s cameras captures the rhythms of daily life for Gazans under Israeli military occupation. It also reflects a particular point in the history of the relationship between Gaza and its occupying neighbour. Fatah, the secular Palestinian nationalist party that dominated the PLO, was the leading representative of Palestinians in Gaza; Hamas’ rise to power was still a decade away. Similarly, Israel’s full-scale occupation of Gaza was in its last days. After the 1994 Cairo Agreement, the IDF would begin a slow process of withdrawal culminating in their disengagement from Gaza in 2005. As of 22 October 2023, Gaza is under complete siege by Israel, as the latter country prepares for a ground invasion of the territory in response to Hamas’ deadly invasion on 7 October. Presently, Gaza is experiencing a humanitarian disaster. In the immediate future, people in Gaza – which is one of the most densely populated areas on earth – face the devastating humanitarian consequences of a large-scale ground war.
