The game of cat’s cradle probably originated in Asia and eventually was brought to Europe. It’s other name “cratch-cradle“ may refer to two of the string figures in the game: the “manger“ (a cratch) and the “cradle“. To play the game, two people and a loop of string are required. The people alternately take the string off each other’s hands to produce eight definite string figures.
