Paul Anthony Young (Luton, 17 January 1956) is a British singer and musician. With the band Q-Tips he scored a hit in 1980 with ’’. In 1982, Young began a solo career. The single ’Love of the common people’, released in that year, was initially a flop, but in the summer of 1983 he scored an international hit with the song ’Wherever I lay my hat’ (originally by Marvin Gaye). This single became a number 1 hit in the United Kingdom. Its successor, ’Come back and stay’, was also successful worldwide. In 1984 a remixed version of ’Love of the common people’ reached first place in the Netherlands and Belgium. ’Come Back and Stay’ is a song that was first recorded in 1981 by its writer Jack Lee. In 1983, Paul Young released his version as a single from his album, ’No Parlez’, and it became an international hit. The song reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also a #22 pop hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts that year.
