Dance Plus City | Šokis plius miestas | Vilnius Palace of Culture, Recreation and Sport

ENG Enormous space, coarse surfaces filling that space, stairs, a fresco... and the tense telling of a story in motion, HANDS UP, by contemporary dance choreographer-dancer Agnietė Lisičkinaitė. This work is a physical body position repeated across a multitude of different cultural, social and religious contexts, containing within itself a multi-layered content. The context chosen by the dancer is the culture of protest. The building designed by Algimantas Mačiulis is a bold counterbalance of those times to the Baroque-style Church of Saints Peter and Paul on the other side of the river. Behind the grey plaster walls are hidden spaces of impressive size, works of art and many stories, ranging from political changes to rock music festivals to the very first international trade fairs. The Vilnius House of Culture, Recreation and Sport was built in 1982, and its architect is Algimantas Mačiulis.
