Elon Musk’s SpaceX Intuitive Machine Lunar Lander Successful Landing! Thursday marked the first American spacecraft to land on the moon since the final Apollo mission in 1972. This is a major milestone in NASA’s goal to ultimately send astronauts back to Earth’s nearest celestial neighbor. The corporate officials of Intuitive Machines, based in Houston, announced that the spacecraft had successfully landed and was in communication with Earth after an anxious few minutes during which ground controllers were uncertain about the condition of the craft. The spacecraft was in fact standing straight, a significant achievement for the growing commercial space industry, the corporation verified about two hours after the landing “after troubleshooting communications”. As soon as the landing, Tim Crain, chief technology officer of Intuitive Machines, declared, “What we can confirm without a doubt, is our equipment is on the surface of the moon, and we are transmitting. So congratulations.” However, success was not guaranteed at first. In the frantic moments immediately following the landing, Crain assured his team that “we’re not dead yet“ and mused out loud as to whether the spacecraft had landed at an “off angle.“ The CEO of the company, Steve Altemus, said to his people, “I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface and we are transmitting. Welcome to the moon.” It was 6:23 p.m. Eastern when the spacecraft touched down, close to the moon’s south pole, following a week-long voyage that seemed to go quite smoothly right from the Kennedy Space Center when it was launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. As it got closer to the moon’s surface, however, ground controllers discovered that the lasers meant to measure its height and horizontal velocity—two essential pieces of information needed for it to land gently on the moon—were not functioning. Before making a landing attempt, they sent the order for the probe to complete an extra moon orbit while downloading a software patch that would enable the spacecraft to start using a NASA Doppler Lidar system, which was intended to be a technology demonstration during the launch. “We weren’t planning to use it in line with the actual mission coming down to the landing, but now we are,” Prasun Desai, the deputy associate administrator for NASA’s space technology mission directorate stated. “So basically it is now the primary system to help provide the velocity and altitude information so that the lander can land safely on the surface.” A big bet that NASA made several years ago, when it launched a $2.9 billion program to hire a fleet of robotic, private-sector spacecraft to carry science experiments, technology instruments, and eventually cargo to the moon, was validated by the company’s apparent landing of its 14-foot-tall Nova-C lander, which was launched without any humans on board.
