The 2023 Australian International Airshow was fortunate to have on static display, the United States Air Force, McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender belonging to the 6th Air Refueling Squadron, part of the 60th Air Mobility Wing from Travis Air Force Base, California. The KC-10’s are slated to be retired in 2024, with the McGuire based birds retiring during the first half of 2023, leaving ’Big Sexy’ to soldier on with the the 6thARS. This particular airframe, 83-0078 has a long history with Australia. In 1984, she was one of the tankers assigned to ferrying the first pair of McDonnell Douglas F/A-18B Hornets on their delivery flight from NAS Leemore to RAAF Base Williamtown for entry into Australian service. 1987 witnessed ’Balls78’ dragging the USAF Thunderbirds to Australia for their dazzling aerobatic displays around the country. 2011 as a static display at the Australian International Airshow, and again now, in 2023.
