S. Rachmaninoff - Op. 3 no. 4 “Polishinelle“
Performed by Eleonora Karpukhova.
Fantasy Pieces for piano, op. 3 (fr. Morceaux de fantaisie) is an early composition by Sergei Rachmaninoff, dated 1892. The cycle consists of five pieces with a total duration of about 21 minutes. The cycle was first performed by the author on September 20, 1892, published by A. Gutheil“ in 1895 with a dedication to Anton Arensky, Rachmaninoff’s teacher in composition. Rachmaninoff left no indication of the dynamics of the performance of the pieces; all notes were made by the editor.
The sequence of pieces is built on the alternation of different types of thematics: pieces No. 1 (“Elegy”), No. 3 (“Melody”), No. 5 (“Serenade”) are saturated with melodies of a wide range, “even” pieces - No. 2 (“Prelude”) and No. 4 (“Polishinelle“) consist of bright, strongly intoned micro-themes of 2-3 sounds.
The pieces of the cycle are considered one of the most performed works by Rachmaninov among students
