On January 5, Mexican authorities arrested Ovidio Guzman, a son of the infamous drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo“ Guzman, in a security operation in the city of Culiacan. This capture has caused a surge of retaliatory attacks from cartel members, turning Culiacan into a war zone. In response, the Mexican government has deployed tanks and heavily armed soldiers to combat the violence. Videos show that military aircraft were also used to attack the cartels.
