Байт (Byte): Part 1 (Intro & PSU)

The Байт (“Bayt“ ... Byte) is a Belarusian clone of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. This particular example is dated October 1991 making it post-Soviet. Not to be confused with the Moldovan BYTE computers! It’s quite a well built machine. It suffered some damage in its journey from Belarus to Australia but nothing I can’t repair. First step is repairing the power supply - it has a custom four-pin (not DIN!!) plug that I’ve not seen on other Soviet-ish machines ... the PSU contains a pair 5V regulators (or stabilisers ... КРЕН5А ... KREN5A) and a КТ819А transistor (NPN). I’m wondering if it outputs ±5VDC ... duh, find & read the manual! Or it could just have twin 5VDC rails, like the Elan Enterprise does. There was a 4700µF 25V electrolytic loose in the PSU so I will repair that first and then try again. It looks like it includes an RF modulated video output as well as the standard RGB DIN output ... I’ll see if my Электроника ВЛ-100 portable TV can display anything! Lots of info here (Russian, but Chrome will translate the whole page): Other videos in this series:
