Visit Visit our website Produced in the late 1920s or early 1930s, and possibly featuring footage from an earlier time, this short, silent tinted film shows views of Stratford-on-Avon, England and pays tribute to its favorite son, playwright William Shakespeare. It includes views of the Shakespeare birth house (:23), the grammar school he attended (1:00), the Ann Hathaway house (1:15). At (2:21) are the ruins of the home of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon. The title cards indicate that the original building was torn down in 1756. At (3:35) a nearby park is shown. At (4:07) the Holy Trinity Church is shown, wherein lie the great poet’s mortal remains. At (5:34) the Tudor House in Stratford-on-Avon is shown. There are general shots of the quaint town including at (6:15) shots of a sheep herder driving his flock through the town. At (6:49) a parade of children pay homage to the great dramatist. At (7:10) the Shakespeare Memorial Fountain, gifted by the American publisher George William Childs, is shown. At (8:04) the Shakespeare Memorial Theater is shown. The film ends with the words of “To the Avon“ by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and images of the Avon and the Theater.
