When Queen Elizabeth II met Mikhail Gorbachev (1989) | Royal History

Mikhail Gorbachev, the last premier of the Soviet Union, has died aged 91. As leader of the USSR he oversaw a period of liberalisation throughout the Soviet Union and a relaxation of East-West tensions, culminating in the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Here is a report from his visit to the UK in April 1989. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh received the Soviet premier and his wife, Raisa Gorbachev, at Windsor Castle, and over lunch Gorbachev invited his hosts to Moscow. The Queen accepted his invitation happily.
