Here’s a wild theory: Nostalgia will be the villain in Inside Out 3. Inside Out 2 briefly introduced Nostalgia, who doesn’t play a big role. But what if she becomes the antagonist in the next film? Imagine Riley reaching an age where she starts feeling Nostalgia, and it begins to take over or distort things. The story could explore the dangers of being blinded by Nostalgia and show that, like Joy, Nostalgia isn’t always a positive emotion. Maybe while Nostalgia is in her little room, she’s actually altering memories or plotting, as we never see what she does or how her room looks. Nostalgia could be changing Riley’s memories to be more positive than they were and influencing her to relive a past that isn’t entirely real. This could highlight the risks of longing for the past. I wonder if Disney and Pixar would tackle this idea, considering it’s a critique of their strategy of pandering to nostalgia (like the live-action remakes). But if they did, it could improve their image. Crafting a story with Nostalgia as a well-meaning antagonist could be powerful and an exciting direction for the story.
