Citizen science and gamification, the power of a playful mind | Joris Lam | TEDxNapoli

How bad is air pollution in your street and what does it do to your health? Joris Lam is a creative technologist who invented TreeWiFi, a smart birdhouse that measures air pollution and gives free WiFi when the air is clean, both providing a city wide WiFi network but also generating detailed air quality data. He is an Amsterdam native but a global thinker. His mission is to bring TreeWiFi to every city in the world where citizens are in need of easy to understand tools to measure the quality of their living environment. After a career in digital media he went on to design products and experiences through the use of digital fabrication technologies. Joris describes himself as a citizen scientist who uses the power of design to make the complex simple and serious subjects fun to interact with.
