Canone a Due Liuti by Francesco da Milano for Two Guitars

This Early Music piece written by the lutenist Francesco da Milano is included in the Cavalcanti Lute Book, the largest anthology of Italian lute music of the sixteenth century, and was never published elsewhere. This work is a canon, where the two guitars play the same melody with the same rhythm but the second guitar starts two measures after guitar 1. The melody is quite complex and articulate, with scale passages that cover a wide range of notes, from the open E on the 6th string to the upper B on the 7th fret. Because the melody has a constant forward motion, this piece might prove to be a little challenging, but it will be fun to play once you master the notes and you can both play with rhythmic precision. There are many different fingerings you can use in this piece, so you are encouraged to experiment and choose fingerings that best suit your playing.
