Prior to joining the army his father Charles was a country and western singer and guitarist and his mother sang and played piano. When he was 10 he began to play an instrument for the first time, the saxophone. At thirteen he taught himself to play guitar after being inspired by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Soon after he began attending shows by artists such as Albert King, B.B. King, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin.
