ABOUT It would be hard to find to find someone at The North Sea Jazz Festival who doesn’t know James Brown. Even his title of honour The Godfather of Soul is common knowledge. Not everybody knows, though, that the man had 114 songs in the Billboard R&B Singles Charts. 94 of these singles made it to the Hot 100 and 17 claimed the top position. Not bad for a formerly poor, black boy. In 1965 he had his first pop hit with Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag and in the ten years to follow he scored hit after hit with Sex Machine as the undeniable greatest. Some more figures. During the James Brown Revues the dancing singer lost seven pounds per night. Brown is in his seventies now, but his shows are still guaranteed to be real happenings.
