APEC 2023: Trudeau, Canada’s trade minister speak at summit in San Francisco | LIVE

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and International Trade Minister Mary Ng are expected to take questions from the media at the 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco on Friday, where delegates have been meeting with Pacific Rim leaders in between high-level plenary sessions. China and Canada are routinely positioned next to each other when leaders gather for photos at the annual gathering given the alphabetic ordering — But outside the family photo, officials have pointed out that the two leaders shared little beyond a perfunctory hello. U.S. President Joe Biden spent four hours with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday in an effort to ease lingering tensions. The two leaders agreed to resume military communications and reached a preliminary agreement on curbing the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. International Trade Minister Mary Ng also said Canada will be especially focused on creating the conditions for economic growth across the Pacific Rim. Ng added that businesses both in Canada and abroad are looking for a level of certainty that will allow them to invest with confidence in growing their international trade.
