Glaciers melting at alarming rate due to summer heatwaves, scientists warn

Extreme temperatures across Europe and much of the northern hemisphere this summer have had an immediate impact on glaciers and ice sheets, according to scientists. Temperatures on the Greenland ice sheet have spiked to almost 0 degrees Celsius. Researchers studying the sheet say there have been four extreme melting events since the year 2000. That’s a huge concern as a melting ice sheet in Greenland cause sea levels to rise worldwide. Swiss glaciologists are recording similar melting events in the Alps. As Redmond Shannon reports, the impact from the rapidly receding glaciers will be long-lasting.
