“ YUGOSLAVIA THE LAND OF COLOR “ 1930s CUNARD-WHITE STAR LINE TRAVELOGUE CROATIA SERBIA 62324

This silent film is presented by Cunard-White Star Line which was a British shipping line existing from 1934-1949. These lines were able to provide regular service to all of Europe and this film will take a look at the country of Yugoslavia (:33). The film introduces the nation as the ‘Kingdom of Yugoslavia’ as it was at the time a monarchy though they became a Socialist Republic in 1945. In the early 90’s the republic dissolved into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. Yugoslavia was located in Southeastern Europe with a population of 13,000,000 in an area that is about twice the size of New York (:46). Most earned a living through agriculture and though industry played a small part, it was increasing (1:31). Natives are seen herding goats through the town (1:47), cattle and sheep are also seen grazing (1:56). The harbor (2:29) as well as industrial area are pictured next (2:48). In the larger cities the inhabitants are seen wearing clothes similar to other heavily populated areas (3:12). For recreation, sailing is looked at (4:11) as well as chess (4:24), sunbathing, and a large water slide (4:43). A swimming instruction class is taught on land (5:03) and civilians take to picnicking by the water (6:00). Team sports like soccer are enjoyed as a spectator sport (6:43). Townsfolk in elaborate costume appear to be rehearsing for a play or a large dance (7:22). Culture here has various and ancient roots including from the Byzantine Empire, from Ancient Carthage as well as Greek and Roman which drew in scientists from all over (7:49). A few ancient buildings are shown in montage (8:17) as well as the inside of a church with religious relics (9:21). Contrary to the larger cities, village inhabitants wore more elaborate and colorful costumes. Each district had a different style of dress (9:51). Two women show the front and also the back of their attire, with long headdress in the back (10:41).
