Call & Response : 150 Drummers | Rockin’1000 x Aric Improta

Hearing 150 drummers mirror back and react to musical ideas without any prior rehearsal, is a feeling that’s hard to describe. Each player with their own inherent attack and individual emotion, moving together in a way that felt more like massive waves than any sort of deliberate technical execution. On May 13, 2022, I was lucky enough to be invited to lead a Call & Response exercise with half the percussion team from the Rockin’1000. We had 15 minutes to pull this off, no prior rehearsal, and I was given notice ahead of time that the group consisted of all levels of musical experience. From enthusiastic beginners to life-long expert percussionists, the ensemble had a ton of creative personality and a unified willingness to participate in something bigger than themselves. The energy was intense, genuine, contagious and it extended beyond just our rhythm section. The other 850 musicians brought that ethos and spirit as well, when they performed some of the most influential rock songs together for a stadium full of people in Paris, France the next night. I honestly had no idea what to expect when going out there. But after hearing it in person, it’s now something I’d recommend to anyone who’s a genuine fan of music and it’s natural ability to bring people together.
